The Jacksonville Urban League has kindly invited me to address them on Zoom. It is an honor to be invited by this organization. Founded in 1910, the missionof National Urban League is to “help African-Americans and others in underserved communities achieve their highest true social parity, economic self- reliance, power, and civil rights. The League promotes economic empowerment through education and job training, housing and community development, workforce development, entrepreneurship, health, and quality of life.” As someone who grew up in the state of Florida in the 1950s and 60s, and given the measures being implemented today by the DiSantis regime, and the fact that for a century after the Civil War, Florida was an epicenter of anti-Black violence in the United States (there were more lynchings per capita in Florida than anywhere else in the nation), this invitation is especially meaningful for me. Not surprisingly, I’ve been asked to talk about dehumanization, which I plan to link with the theme of racial healing and reconciliation. Join us!
