Presentations on the dehumanization of victims of lynching, the warning signs of genocide, and other matters.
It’s been quite a while since I last posted here. The fact is, I have been so snowed under with writing deadlines, teaching, and other things that I haven’t had the mental space (or the physical time) to post anything thoughtful here. But half term is now on the horizon, so this will soon change. In the meantime, I’ll share information about three talks that I will be giving, two of which can be joined on Zoom.
Those of you who are acquainted with my work will know that I often discuss the lynching of African Americans as an illustration of the most toxic form dehumanization. Most Americans are shockingly ignorant of the facts about this form of racialized violence. But things are changing, albeit very slowly. On Monday, March 14 at 6PM (Central) I will be giving a talk on the dehumanization of lynching victims for the Memphis Lynching Sites Project. This will be a hybrid presentation. You can join the event on Zoom, by using the link below.
Dehumanization is intimately bound up with genocidal violence. On March 30, I will be giving a presentation on Confronting Genocide and Antisemitism - Identifying the Warning Signs, at the Portsmouth Public library. The event is sponsored by NH Fulbright Association and the World Affairs Council of NH, in partnership with the Lantos Foundation. If you live in southern New England you can come to the event. Otherwise you can watch online via YouTube at https://wacnh.org/
Finally, for Brits only. On May 26-29. I will be speaking at the How the Light Gets In festival at Hay-on-Wye. Billed as “the world’s largest music and philosophy festival,” this should be an amazing event. Check it out at https://howthelightgetsin.org/festivals/hay
